ECP Events - ECP Book Club

We’re so excited to announce ECP’s brand-new Book Club hosted by Ms Amanda! Every month we’ll read a book recommended by students, then meet to share our experiences with the story. We look forward to hearing all of your thoughts as we exchange interpretations and explore questions about the characters, action, worldbuilding, word choices, and so much more! January: The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani February: OCDaniel by Wesley King March: The War the Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley April: The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies May: Dread Wood by Jennifer Killick June: The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate FAQs: 1. Why these books? All titles will be directly recommended by students to ensure that they’re engaging and fun to read. At the same time, we’ll cover different genres and topics so participants can expand their reading range and learn about new authors, vocabulary, and writing styles! 2. How is this different from just talking with a friend or joining Battle of the Books? While it’s true that Ms Amanda loves talking about books, the moderated discussion will help us dig deeper, beyond the plot and facts about the book. We’ll read as writers and examine how authors use their writing to express complex thoughts and themes.  For example, the first month’s pick The School For Good and Evil has also been made into a Netflix show, so it will be exciting to compare the two versions and discuss the impact of the changes. Does it feel like the same story or not? 3. Does my child need to have finished the book to join? Yes, your child should be familiar enough with the book or story to participate in the discussion. In the case of The School For Good and Evil, familiarity with the show would also be acceptable, but discussion will focus on the book. Also, since the expectation is that participants have already read the book, there will be spoilers!   4. Where can I find the books? The selected books are available at the Hong Kong Public Library, very likely at your child’s school library, or can be purchased through our bookstore partner, Seeds Children's Bookstore. They will have stock of both books for Jan/Feb at the end of December with 15% off online. Contact us for the discount code!
